Ironic Nike park bench stencil makes me feel emptier

I'm still trying to work out where this piece of 'street art' came from. I can't tell if someone cared about art and humour enough to dismantle a park bench and stencil the Nike logo on it.

I just have this feeling...you know...that it's marketing...

But I wanted to share it with you anyway. Let's enjoy the humour. But this isn't the first time I've thought about how advertising and street art are closely linked. Visit the posts below to see why.

What are you doing with your precious life?

Precious: 1. Of high cost or worth; valuable. 2. Highly esteemed; cherished.

Lake Okeechobee
Last week I was listening to a ted talk by Diana Nyad where she spoke of her attempt to swim from Cuba to Florida. She was very close to achieving her goal but had to be taken out of the water because of the severity of the stings from jellyfish.  It was very interesting to hear about her motivation.  She ended the talk with one of those precious questions that snap you back into living in the moment.

What is it that you are doing with your precious life?

Lake Okeechobee

"Ordinary riches can be stolen, real riches cannot. In your soul are infinitely precious things that cannot be taken from you." Oscar Wilde

"Your problem is how you are going to spend this one and precious life you have been issued. Whether you're going to spend it trying to look good and creating the illusion that you have power over circumstances, or whether you are going to taste it, enjoy it and find out the truth about who you are." Anne Lamott

"We spend precious hours fearing the inevitable. It would be wise to use that time adoring our families, cherishing our friends and living our lives." Maya Angelou

Lake Okeechobee

"Don't spend your precious time asking "Why isn't the world a better place?" It will only be time wasted. The question to ask is "How can I make it better?" To that there is an answer."  Leo Buscaglia

All photos in this post were taken by me at Lake Okeechobee.  It's a nice quiet ride on a pretty isolated road except for a truck here and there.  The scenery is acres and acres of sugar cane fields just like my beloved Puerto Rico back in the day.  The lake is pretty muddy and not much to do other than fish.

Now I turn to you, what are you up to?

RBS Bonus

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-16783571

I saw Ed Miliband at the weekend say that the Government should stop the bonus. Er.........Ed, in case you didn't know, Gordon Brown signed his contract. His contract entitles him to the bonus. You can't just ignore employee's contracts - it's the law!!!!
I assume, then, that if Ed Miliband thinks the Government can just ignore the contract that his predecessor signed, then it will be OK for the Government to change all the public sector workers' contracts and change their pensions?

Graffiti under a bridge, St Peters

I turned the motor off and got my phone out. I was late running late, so late that she'd probably leave the bar with someone else.

Having a car for the first time in for-ages, I thought there wouldn't be much graffiti under the bridge at Edgeware Road, St Peters. I got out anyway.

I was wrong, sort of. I saw this Birdhat, a little faded, but still good. I'd say it's in its eighth trimester.

This was the biggest ILL cat I've seen. Too big to hold. I wonder if someone will come up with the idea of taking photos of a bunch of ILL's stencils and publishing them in a children's book? Maybe with a little funding from Marrickville Council?

Oh wait, someone has done that.

Mosaic stencil.

So at this point I got a text which read "hey bb, u no we hav a gud fing goin on yah? But I found anutha. He's strong n ridez a byke. Ltrz bb xoxo". And like that, everything went quiet.

So I got more Birdhat. Ninth trimester.

Kois. I've seen a bunch of this guy's pieces around Sydney's inner west. Welcome to Acid Midget Kois.

After this I drove home alone. And all I have to show for it is some photos of birds, cats and bears. Was it worth it?

Power

Power: The ability or capacity to perform or act effectively.

“There is no knowledge that is not power.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

Today I'm thinking about the power we each hold as individuals. Power is not solely reserved for elected officials, an individual action also creates ripples in the universe. I'm learning to be more conscientious of my actions. I try to do things everyday to make the world better because this world is mine and I do have a say. I hope you know you do as well. I try to do better ... I try to be better because I know I can make contributions that will lead to a better life for the children of this generation. In this large world and larger universe we all hold power.

“The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don't have any.” Alice Walker

“Power is my mistress. I have worked too hard at her conquest to allow anyone to take her away from me.” Napoleon Bonaparte

“Justice and power must be brought together, so that whatever is just may be powerful, and whatever is powerful may be just.” Blaise Pascal

“When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace.” Jimi Hendrix

"I believe that imagination is stronger than knowledge. That myth is more potent than history. That dreams are more powerful than facts. That hope always triumphs over experience. That laughter is the only cure for grief. And I believe that love is stronger than death." Robert Fulghum

Portrait Photography: Subject Gaze

Yesterday, I was looking through the beautiful collection of portraits I've been putting together on my Pinterest board as I so often do.

I've pinned countless images of famous people captured by some of the most talented photographers. I study them while asking myself
'what makes a great portrait?'

A great portrait happens when either a piece of the subjects personality comes across or a piece of the photographers personality through their specific point of view comes across. This is a very difficult thing to accomplish especially when you have a subject who is very aware of the camera. The magic is in the spontaneous, unpracticed posed.

One tip for obtaining a candid portrait is to have your subject look away from the lens. Instantly a mystery is created. What are they looking at?  Why are they reacting that way?

You can also control the mood of the story your photo is telling by showing or not showing what your subject is looking at.

For the more advanced, a gaze creates a line. Playing with this line affects the composition of the photo.

The following are photos from my Pinterest Boards where the subject is looking away from the camera.
